john gilmour

last night i went to the John Gilmour 10k track race. i was supposed to be running but had to pull out at the last minute, so went armed with my camera instead. which as it turned out was very fortunate. i sent the pics off to the running mag thos morning and have now been asked to write the report for the mag. wow, cool. extra cool because John Gilmour has been a hero of mine for quite a while.

i wont bother putting up any running pics, but i did get rather side tracked shooting legs. i like runners legs.

the park again

went off for another play in the conservation park behind home yesterday and found these cute bees having a lovely feed on a blackboy spike.


i like the way the bees carry stuff on their back legs, like bee panniers.



Seems others feed on the flowers too, heres a waspy type thing. big flat flies were on it too but didnt photograph that.


the wildflowers have been really pretty this year. a fire went through the park 2 years back and so the areas that burnt are just a sea of colour. im not sure if the fire puts nutrients back into the soil or if it just provides more bare soil for the flowers to germinate. maybe both.





I remember reading once that flowers that have this funny comb type shape to their flowers do it so that when the insect feeds on the flower, the comb pollinates the insects head and so the insect then carries it to the next flower. not sure if that is the case for kangaroo paws but they have a pretty unique flower thats for sure.


this was back at home in my vegie patch. i guess its probably not a good sign as these little moths eat the crap out of my greens, but i dont really mind, theres plenty there. i like the way he is coloured to blend in to the leaves.

my best friend kelli and her boy darcy

have just been in Adelaide for my aunts wedding (which was really really lovely, incidentally) and so managed to spend another fabulous night with my best mate kelli. even though we only seem to catch up every few months its always a hoot.

mag article

was having a play this morning doing a pic for a running mag article about shoes for an ultra runner. the aim was to do a pic that illustrated a dnf (for non-runners, thats a did not finish) in a trail race.

in the end i chose this first one.

people

have just been down in Bunbury for a running trip. i was racing so have no running photos but was just having a play, while we were having a bbq, with peoples faces. black and white adds a certain element of mood to a pic.

my dad

for those who know me well, you'll know that my dad was really special to me. i have under my bed a shoe box full of assorted stuff my mum sent over. its an odd assortment, but it sums up my dad totally. heres a peak into the box.

my dad always had boggins of keys. keys for everything. some labelled. most not. no idea if he knew what they were all for.

this pack of cards went everywhere with us as kids. on holidays it was always carted along, and we played a lot at home too. the irony of them is that they advertise alcohol, something my dad was totally against. but then i think irony is a word that suited dad.


dad was a radiographer, for the repat hospital in adelaide. i used to spend lots of time at the hospital typing up the reports for him and delivering the xrays to the ward, so heres a pic of all things radiography related.


he was into lots of things. i have definitely inherited that gene - jump head first into something with ultimate gusto. anything from photography to coaching gymnastics to growing orchids to small business. although one of his long term interests was stamps.


this pot always sat on his bedside table, and for a long as i can remember it always had the same contents - a few coins, a screw, a rubber band, a cuff link, and some fluff. i love that the fluff is still there.


i dont actually recall seeing these medals when dad was alive, i assume they had always been in his drawer in this box.

dad never went to war or anything, but the medals are the funniest assortment of things. theres a child safety honour badge, some school sports medals, a 'save menzies' badge, and get this......a medal for 'the league of ovaltineys'. is that as in those little lollies i used to eat as a kid?!

melbourne half marathon

have just got back from a weekend in melbourne with my 3 gorgeous running friends. no idea why, but i didnt get my camera out and take any pics of us, dooooop.

but heres my medal. i ran crap, so am not going to pretend otherwise! but the medal is cool.

When i first got under 50mins for 10k i bought myself a bracelet and then decided i would buy a new charm for any significant running event. Even though i didnt run well this weekend, i bought a charm to symbolise our friendship which came about through running.

burleigh heads national park

managed to squeeze in a quick photo trip into the burleigh heads national park last week. its really amazing being in a park with such different vegetation to what im used to. I could have stayed there all day, it was really beautiful.


This was looking straight up. No idea what this tree is but the little flowers looked gorgeous.


This is the same pic but cropped right down to show the detail of the little flowers.

Loved the colours of this plant, and its little tendrils.

Green with a bit of red, that seemed to be the only colour scheme.

These ferns were really cool. This one was suckered onto a rock and the pic below into a tree.

I like the colours in this national park. Its really green but then there were loads of dark reds too, i like the bark of the tree in this shot too.

There was life at all levels, trees, shrubs, moss on the exposed roots, tiny plants within the leaft litter.

Loved how this leaf had squiggly tendrils on either end.
