fridge experiment turns into a lesson

i caught the end of a tv show tonight on food wastage and apparently WA people annually throw out 300,000 tonnes of food to landfill.

300,000 tonnes.

that is ridiculous. i never meant this to be anything more than a fun thing to do, but i am now committed to cutting down my food wastage forever. 300,000 tonnes is mad.

So i am on day 4, and yesterday i made gnocci, and had it with a tomato, onion and olive sauce.

and fresh tomato soup.

and a roast pumpkin salad, had that yesterday and today.

and pasta with pesto tonight.

the fridge experiment continues

last nights dinner, felafels with tahini dressing and tomato and avocado.

umm, last nights late night snack when i got hungry again. Oven baked chilli chips with tahini dip (also known as dressing) and betroot dip.

breakfast, museli with strawberries. boring schmoring. i like a humongous bowl of fruit but theres none in the crisper.

lunch - cabbage with tahini dressing. although i need to admit i had 3 bowls of this. and some felafels as well.

and a boysenberry smoothie. didnt they used to say on semame street 'today is brought to you by the colour purple'.

the fridge experiment

i was looking in my fridge this morning trying to decide if i needed to go to the supermarket today. and then i thought......

why not see how long i can go just eating what is left in the fridge.

so i emptied out the contents of the crisper, and this is what it has to offer.

oh and heres a pic of the tomatoes, for no other reason than they looked nice.

i still have a pantry full of grains.

and dried fruit, nuts and seeds.

ok, so experiment begins, and i have a very adapted version of the beetroot cannellini and pear (without the pear) dip on chickpea crackers for lunch. Heres the crackers straight from the oven.

with a glass of water with lemon and mint to wash it down. yum scrum.

me = domestic goddess

i read a lovely quote last night about making life playful. and this morning as i lay in bed contemplating my day of chores i thought, how does one making housework playful.

heres how.

i was hanging out load 1 of 8 loads of washing, apparently my nan hangs things by colour codes, so i gave it a go.

which then got me thinking about my friend Joanne who is really irked by mismatched pegs, sorry babe.

to be honest i actually enjoy polishing wood. i make my own polish and it smells divine, so heres some action.

and some results.

then i got somewhat sidetracked by one of my resident spiders. i accidently left the door open and 2 flies went screaming head first into the web. wish hed come out and eat them in daylight so i could watch.

so time to make a cake, its a recipe i adapted from one my mum used to make. starts with mashed spud.

and is really good as an energy cake for long runs as it has no added fat, just fruit, spud, wholemeal flour and soy milk.

then the clean up.

time to fold and iron.

apologies to those who dont particularly need to see my undies!! i kinda like the colours though.

and to finish off a nice cuppa and piece of cake.

apples

was reading a brochure i picked up at the fruit and veg shop about the values of eating an apple a day. and i was looking at the pics wondering how i would do them if the apple board asked me to make apples look sexy!

i figured id use a shot like this on the front page, with the wording in the black section.

and then use one of these in the bottom corner of the info pages.

bunch of flowers

bought myself a bunch of flowers today, i love lilliums, they are probably my favourite flower.

although sunflowers might come a close second.

had a play with colour saturation in these ones, dropped the colour almost completely out to try to give it a softer, romantic mood.

these gerbras are a really vivid red, but i like the look when you drop the colour out. i used a pieve of card behind for this one to give the shado effect. bought some wicked colour cards today and am gonig to have a play with those tonight.

gnw100

last weekend i went over for the Great North Walk 100 mile ultra marathon in NSW.

one of the runners, deep in thought at the start line. i am not sure what goes through ones head knowing you are about to run for 35 hours straight.

this girl was my favourite runner. she came into one of the checkpoints in the early hours of the second morning and she was totally exhausted, she wasnt going on. she had a cry and a cup of tea and still wasnt going on. then she sat in silence for a while and warmed herself by the fire, then pulled on her shoes and ran on. i wish i could have captured all of that on my camera but it felt like a complete invasion of her privacy, so i didnt. but this is her earlier in the race.

another very smiley runner, shes a trooper. didnt finish due to a hip injury, but a gutsy little chick nonetheless.

i liked watching these 2 interact, and i like this pic for all the bits in the background, with the bike and the flowers, it looks more like they should be having a picnic. but he has a number on his arm and is 50k into a race, but unless you knew that the photo would look completely different.

nothing amazing about this pic, i just like the effort that went into the no parking sign, with the black outline and the cut up bits of card, kinda cute.

these are the arms of my friend Carmen washing out her boyfriends stinky socks.

and this is one of the runners finishing, i like the look on his face, his family were there, it must be an emotional experience.

another two runners coming through the finish.

oh and at some point i got sick of looking at runners and played with some bees.
